La Mesa Goes Green

La Mesita Park 1It’s a fresh new year for parks in La Mesa. To kick it off, we invite you to enjoy the new playgrounds at Vista La Mesa Park and La Mesita Park. These new playgrounds were provided through the La Mesa Park & Recreation Foundation thanks to donations by local community members.

The Foundation is currently raising funds for Collier Park and MacArthur Park. Help support local La Mesa Parks at

Electric Cart 2

This new year we are also “greening” up our parks – maintenance in MacArthur Park just got a little quieter AND greener with the addition of the City’s first 100% electric turf cart! The electric cart not only reduces emissions, but also saves the City money on fuel and maintenance costs. A win-win!

Climate Action Plan Updates

In March of last year, City Council adopted La Mesa’s first Climate Action Plan (CAP). The CAP creates a roadmap for the City to decrease energy and water waste, create safer streets for bikers and pedestrians, increase recycling, advance 100% clean energy, reduce vehicle trips, and expand the urban tree canopy. The City, our partners, and YOU, have been busy turning that plan into action. Curious what we’ve been up to?

Looking to 100% renewable electricity - the cities of La Mesa and Chula Vista have partnered on a joint study to assess the viability of 100% renewable energy through Community Choice Aggregation (CCA). Under a CCA, residents and businesses have the opportunity to choose who will purchase energy on their behalf – either the CCA or the incumbent utility (San Diego Gas & Electric) – and the renewable content of their electricity. The feasibility study, starting in the coming months, is the first step to determine whether such a program would help address the climate and clean energy goals of each city.

Speaking of reducing waste and increasing recycling, have you heard about our Backyard Compost Bin Voucher program? The City of La Mesa, in partnership with Dixieline ProBuild, offers vouchers for $40 off select compost bins at the La Mesa store. Composting is good for the environment and your garden, so take that organic waste out of trash bin and start composting today.
