Why is Live Well Important to La Mesa?

Live Well Is Important
Local city government can have the most impact on citizen’s lives than any other level of government. Some of the contributing environmental factors to the obesity epidemic include streets and neighborhoods that force one to use a car or bus rather than walking, lack of access to safe, convenient parks and recreational spaces, easy availability of non-nutritious food, and cutbacks in school physical education programs. These factors often thwart even the best intentions of families and individuals. Tackling the obesity epidemic becomes a much greater problem than merely the sheer force of individual will to change.

A city is in a unique position to approve local land use policies that support a healthy lifestyle. For example, adding sidewalks or bike routes to schools and parks, and creating pedestrian friendly design strategies in urban areas. Cities can partner with schools to enhance recreational opportunities, as well as provide their own programming and facilities. In addition, cities can promote access to healthy food such as farmers markets and community gardens.
