Scholarship Program

Thelma Palermo in memory of her husband, Pietro "Pete" Palermo, established the City of La Mesa, Palermo Scholarship Fund in April 1986.  Mr. Palermo was a prominent local businessman and beloved citizen of La Mesa who was very fond of children and recognized the importance of recreational opportunities in building confidence and self-esteem.

This fund utilizes the interest earned to provide individual scholarships for children who would otherwise not be able to experience our recreation programs.

It's easy to apply for the Pete Palermo Scholarship, just follow these steps:

  • Check eligibility, guidelines, and income limits, and complete the Scholarship Application and Registration Form.
City of La Mesa residents who are 17 years old or younger, and meet the household income guidelines provided by the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development are eligible.  Qualifying families receive a credit of $60 for each eligible child per session. You may apply for a scholarship twice during a calendar year. If the entire $60 is not used, it cannot be refunded, transferred to another child, or used for a different session.
  • Bring the completed application and required supporting documentation to the Community Services Department, 4975 Memorial Drive, La Mesa CA 91942 during regular business hours or email to recreation@cityoflamesa.us.
