The La Mesa Police Department contracts with the San Diego Humane Society (SDHS) for all animal services. The San Diego Humane Society has been providing sheltering and medical care for La Mesa's animals at its El Cajon Campus since October 2020.
In addition to all the specialized programs the San Diego Humane Society offers, such as the Kitten Nursery, Behavior Center, Pilar & Chuck Bahde Center for Shelter Medicine, Badhe Wildlife Center, Community Support Services and community education, residents in La Mesa will have extended animal control and dispatch hours.
For animal services, please call the San Diego Humane Society 619.299.7012 (press 1 for Humane Law Enforcement Dispatch) or visit San Diego Humane Society for more information about services.
The San Diego Humane Society does not handle dead animal removal. Notify the La Mesa Police Department about dead animal removal from public streets by calling 619.667.1400, option 6 or via e-mail to PD Communications Staff and we will ensure the animal is picked up by our service provider.
